CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio —
Grand theft: Mayfield Road
At 8:15 p.m. May 31, a woman went to the police station to report that, the day before, two Apple iPods and two Apple iPhones she just purchased had been stolen.
The woman said she bought the items at two AT&T stores as presents for her niece and nephew and had placed them in their separate bags on the floor of her car’s passenger side. She then picked up a male she had recently met on Instagram with plans for them to visit Edgewater Park in Cleveland.
The woman was driving with the man in the passenger seat, and was following a vehicle that contained friends of the man.
Before heading to the park, the man asked her to stop at Heights Deli & Market, 2879 Mayfield Road. She did so, and the man went inside the store.
The woman then saw that one of the bags, containing a phone and iPad, was missing from the floor of her car, while the second bag, containing the same, had been emptied of its contents.
The woman called the man’s cell phone while he was inside the store, but he did not answer. He also did not respond to her Instagram message. The woman then spoke to the man’s friends, who were in the vehicle parked next to hers in the deli’s lot.
The friends said they didn’t know where the man had gone.
The man then messaged the woman, telling her to come inside the store, but she did not want to, fearing the vehicle with his friends might drive away. The woman repositioned her car in the lot, near the store’s door, and as she did so, the vehicle with the friends inside drove away.
She followed briefly, but then returned to the store
She then went into the store and was told by the clerk that the man was not there. When asked, the clerk said he did enter the store holding the two iPhones and two iPads.
Police went to the store on May 31 and spoke to the clerk, who said that the man had offered to sell him the iPads and iPhones. He bought the two iPhones for $380 apiece, but not the iPads.
The clerk did not have the phones with him when speaking to police, and said they were “in transit.”
The woman told police she does not know the man’s last name. She was, however, able to provide police with the license plate number of the friends’ vehicle.
The detective bureau is investigating.
Disorderly conduct: Bainbridge Road
At 4:10 p.m. May 30, police were called to a Bainbridge Road home where a woman reported that as she worked on her lawn mower in her front yard, a male neighbor approached and began yelling about his dislike for her dog.
The woman said that she backed away and walked toward her home, but the hostile man then came upon her property.
She used her cell phone to video record the man, but that did not dissuade his behavior. She then called police.
Police spoke with the man, who was not cooperative, but did tell of his dislike for the dog. The man ranted and approached two officers while clenching his fists, despite being told not to do so.
Officers eventually arrested the man for disorderly conduct. While in the police cruiser, the man calmed, but police believed he was experiencing a mental health episode and took him to a hospital for evaluation.
Domestic violence: Noble Road
At 12:15 a.m. June 2, police were called to an apartment in the 2700 block of Noble Road on a report of domestic violence.
On the scene, officers attempted to speak with the victim, a man. There was, however, a language barrier problem, and the man’s nephew, 12, translated for him.
The man said he had been choked and hit by his wife. Police saw injuries to the man’s shoulders and neck.
Police then spoke with the woman, who immediately became defensive and replied, “I don’t know,” when asked what had happened.
Through his nephew, the man again affirmed that he had been harmed by his wife.
Police arrested the woman but, when officers requested a further statement from the man about the incident, he changed his story and said they were play fighting when he was accidentally injured.
Police, nonetheless, charged the woman with domestic violence, strangulation and assault.
Warrant arrest: Superior Road
At 6 p.m. June 2, an officer was on patrol in the 14200 block of Superior Road when he came across a pickup truck stopped in the northbound lane, obstructing traffic.
The truck’s male driver signaled for the officer to stop. The officer learned that as the truck was passing it struck a leaf blower that was in the hands of a man blowing leaves from the street.
The man with the leaf blower was not injured.
The two men disagreed as to the details of what occurred and did not want further police involvement.
The officer did learn, however, that the man with the leaf blower was wanted on a Cleveland police warrant for contempt of court. The man was taken into custody for pickup by Cleveland police.
