The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde is back out on her own, this time with a duets collection, to lead a week of new music releases that also new titles from Ty Dolla $ign, Boz Scaggs, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Vince Gill, Tame Impala and a banjo-toting Steve Martin, as well as the final live performance by the late Chick Corea (all subject to change)…
Album of the Week — Chrissie Hynde & Pals, “Duets Special” (Rhino/Parlophone): Though truculent in nature at times, the Akron native and Pretenders founder does play nice with others — certainly on this set of 13 cover collaborations that follows her 2021 album of Bob Dylan Songs. Hynde is joined by peers (Debbie Harry, k.d. lang, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, the late Mark Lanegan) and proteges (Cat Power, the Killers’ Brandon Flowers, Garbage’s Shirley Manson) and trades off with fellow Akronite Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys on the Righteous Brothers’ “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.” Julian Lennon, Rufus Wainwright, Carleen Anderson and Low’s Alan Sparhawk are also part of the party here.
