Rulings by two judges on Friday halted the Trump administration’s plan to freeze food aid during the federal government shutdown. The potential suspension of the $8 billion Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, dominates this week’s editorial cartoon gallery, overlaid with a Halloween theme.
Phil Hands leads the gallery with trick-or-treating children trying to make their candy last. Dana Summers sees Democrats telling kids dependent on SNAP to “get lost.” Mike Luckovich’s costumed goblins ask if they can come back tomorrow and the next day for more food. Drew Sheneman draws the GOP as Marie Antoinette saying, “Let them eat takeout.” Jack Ohman sees President Donald Trump as the grumpy neighbor who turns the lights off on Halloween.
Construction of a ballroom where the White House East Wing once stood remains a hot topic. Sheneman’s White House trick-or-treater gets a chunk of demolition debris in his bag. Summers reminds us that Harry Truman also “gutted the White House.” Steve Breen sees Trump’s divisive presidency as a “brawlroom.”
Other news events in this week’s editorial cartoon gallery include a gambling scandal involving NBA players and coaches; various views of the government shutdown, now a month old; the president’s physical; Trump’s acknowledgement that the Constitution prevents him from serving a third term; and the tech bros selling America on artificial intelligence.
Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Scott Stantis, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
