AKRON, Ohio – The city of Akron is hosting a free, five-week financial literacy program for adults at the Joy Park Community Center, located at 825 Fuller St.
The workshop series covers strategies to build wealth and comes as consumer financial distress has reached a record-high level, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling’s 2025 Q3 Financial Stress Forecast. The nonprofit’s forecast reveals that American households face “significant and sustained pressure” and projects a spike in unsecured debt defaults, according to a news release.
The program is scheduled from 6-7 p.m. and begins Feb. 12 (the program was originally slated to begin Tuesday, Jan. 20 but was canceled due to frigid temperatures). Additional dates are Feb. 24, March 10 and March 26. A make-up date for the fifth program will be added soon.
Workshop topics covered include creating generational wealth, retirement planning, college funds, tax-free accounts and life insurance, according to the city. The program is open to anyone age 18 and older and features light refreshments.
