CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WCMH) — Proceeds from the sale of the property which houses the soon-to-be-shuttered Chillicothe paper mill could be used to help former employees and the greater community, according to a letter obtained by NBC4.
In a memorandum of understanding, Pixelle Specialty Solutions — the parent company of the paper mill — and JobsOhio agreed to preliminary terms regarding what happens to the property after the paper mill closes down in August.
The property will be transferred to an entity chosen by JobsOhio or another government body for $1 so that it can be developed for future use, according to the letter.
Pixelle will keep proceeds from the sale of any equipment, while prioritizing local businesses.
“All proceeds from the sale of the property will be used by JobsOhio and the State of Ohio for the benefit of the former employees of the Paper Mill and the greater Chillicothe community, to include hosting jobs fairs, transitional and skills training, and other services for former PIxelle employees,” the letter reads.
Pixelle will also be responsible for any legally required environmental remediation and demolition.
The agreement is non-binding and is subject to change. The agreement assumes that there is no third-party buyer for the plant.
