The Americans are seeking their first gold medal since the famed Miracle on Ice of 1980. The U.S. has come close, earning silver in 2002 and 2010. A collision course with the Canadians has long been thought to be the final test.
The U.S. carved through the preliminary round of Latvia, Denmark and Germany, winning all three games by at least three goals. Eleven different players have scored a goal, and four Olympians have scored multiple goals for the Stars and Stripes.
Maple Leafs center and Team Captain Auston Matthews leads the charge with three goals. Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk has tallied five assists.
The United States has scored 16 goals at Milano Cortina and have a plus-11 point differential, which ranks second in the Olympics behind only Canada.
After one game of rest, Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck returned to his post with a sensational outing, halting 23 of 24 shots against Germany.
The U.S. has not played a game since Feb. 15, making rust vs. rest a slight factor against a team that just battled on the ice less than 24 hours ago.
