President Donald Trump’s demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make room for a giant ballroom dominates this week’s editorial cartoon gallery. Jack Ohman leads off by comparing the stately, classical monuments to previous presidents to Trump’s pile of rubble.
Bill Bramhall continues the theme, drawing Trump riding a wrecking ball that has demolished the U.S. Capitol and democracy writ large. Dana Summers wonders why all the fuss since many other presidents altered the historic building. Check out David Horsey’s conception of Trump’s White House redevelopment plan, which includes a throne room, casino, a golf course and gift shop. Mike Luckovich and Joel Pett nod to the millions in corporate donations financing Trump’s ballroom.
Editorial cartoonists also commented on the nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations last Saturday. Summers points to menacing signs carried by so-called “peaceful” protesters. Nick Anderson views Trump’s AI-generated video of himself as a fighter pilot dropping filth on the protesters as soiling American political values and norms.
Other news events captured in this week’s cartoon gallery include the president’s demand for a $230 million payment from the Justice Department as “compensation” for previous investigations into his behavior; his grant of freedom to convicted former New York Congressman George Santos; the federal government shutdown; and the New York Young Republican racist texting scandal.
Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
